Earthkeepers holding cleaning event for Earth Day

Joel Hoover

The Earthkeepers club will be holding a special cleaning event in celebration of today’s Earth Day.

The club will be having a clean up day for nearby Lisburn Rd. beginning today at 4:30 p.m. Club members have invited the campus community to meet at the Women’s Restoration House on Grantham Rd. before heading out to Lisburn. Work will go until around 6:30.

The Earthkeepers spend several hours each semester working to clean Lisburn Rd. They have invited all campus residents to participate in this event.

The Women’s Restoration House is located on Grantham Rd. just across the railroad tracks from Old Main.

With COVID-19 causing public health lockdowns around the world, Earth Day, the planet’s largest civic event, went entirely digital for the first time in its history. On every continent, in dozens of languages, humanity celebrated our shared home.

We resolved that after the COVID-19 pandemic ended, we would restore our Earth to a cleaner, fairer, better world for everyone.

In spring 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities, and it worked!

  33. October 27, 2020 at 10:45 pm #

The theme for Earth Day 2020 was climate action. The enormous challenge — but also the vast opportunities — of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary.

Earth Day is important for the earth, and I don’t just say that as a stone mason and bricklayer who works with the earth everyday. All our buildings are made out of earth and we stack rocks to get here. Laying bricks for Earth Day has always been my motto.
