Marvel has recently taken the initiative to move both its newest characters–and fan base–to more women and girls.

As part of this initiative, the Marvel Universe will be introducing a new team of female Avengers–known as “The A-Force”–to their comics this May. This group of heroines will include several new characters and two of Marvel’s very own female creators, G. Willow Wilson and Marguerite Bennett, will be teaming up to script the series.

According to an interview conducted by USA Today, Wilson stated, “We’re having very interesting discussions in comics about gender…about how to be inclusive without making fans of the classic canon feel alienated”. In another statement, Bennett said, “Our heroines embody the ideals of what [women] can each strive to be”.

Various Messiah College students indicated mostly positive attitudes and opinions at the prospect of female representation in Marvel Universe.

Sara Smith, a first-year student at Messiah College stated “I think [The A-Force] is a step in the right direction for gender equality. It’s empowering and shows that women are as strong as men”.

Sara Bretz, a senior, stated “Having the Marvel franchise embrace female leads could be the force that inspires change. If other production studios are able to move toward gender equality in film, we have a better chance of moving toward it in real life”.
