Four candidates gathered in the High Center Sunday evening for the 2015-16 Student Chaplain Team Selection alternate chapel. Two students each had the opportunity to make their case to be next year’s Worship Chaplain and Student Body Chaplain for the gathered students, who then had the opportunity to vote on their selections.

The two students selected will be announced in the future.

The first Worship Chaplain candidate to perform was Jordan Schoenberger. He sang and played several popular worship songs on the piano, including “Forever.”

“I’m a little nervous in case you haven’t put that together,” he joked at the beginning of his set.

Next, Caleb Fugate preached on what he thinks Messiah College needs to hear. His simple answer: Messiah needs to hear the Gospel. Fugate went on to discuss Moses’s encounter with God on Mt. Sinai in Exodus. He stressed that Moses was in the presence of God because he wasn’t “wearing a mask.”

Matt Fahnestock was the second candidate for Worship Chaplain. He joked that his roommates told him to cover an Ed Sheeran song. Instead he played several acoustic songs such as “This is Amazing Grace” and “Lord, I Need You.”

Finally Student Body Chaplain candidate Tyler Goglio gave his sermon. He used a humorous story from his time in middle school to demonstrate, “the things we notice when we purposely look for them.” Instead of answering the question “What does Messiah College need to hear?” Goglio said it’s more important to ask what Messiah College needs to do.

Students who attended the chapel filled out a brief survey for each candidate. A scale from 1-10 was used to rate the applicants’ leadership presence, maturity of faith, connection with the audience, and more. Two short answer questions were also available to provide additional thoughts on each candidate. At the end of the survey, students chose between Schoenberger and Fahnestock for Worship Chaplain and Fugate and Goglio for Student Body Chaplain.
