What better cure to the winter blues than the hue itself?

It has seemingly become a trend to shy away from denim in favor of alternate clothing materials, but denim is branded into the fashion spectrum for the long haul. It is an easy-access clothing item that everyone has in their wardrobe. Students around campus have shown how they can dress up and mess around with their denim pieces.

First-year Rich Speeney shows how denim can be used as a substitute for dress pants when paired with a sweater that really pops. If you want to look dressed up without having to iron a pair of khakis, this is a good combination.

The vibrant colors in Speeney’s sweater spice up the outfit, while the neutrality of the denim works well to tone down the piece, giving it a more sophisticated look.

Senior Hayley Cowoski pulls off a similar look with her denim skinny jeans. From the toes up, her outfit says fun with a touch of flair. The neutral gray color of her boots complement her jacket while allowing her plum-colored shirt to make a color statement of its own. Tight fitting jeans paired with ankle boots are a fashion must this season, and Cowoski shows us why – it is an adorable combination!

A bonus that ankle boots offer is their ability to dress an outfit up without being the main focus of the ensemble, as a taller pair of boots might. So, if you are looking to change up the way you wear your skinny jeans, try substituting your current footwear for a pair of ankle boots.

In a different take on denim, junior Andrew Harris shows how nothing goes better with denim than denim. Harris boldly chooses to wear a pair of black skinny jeans with a denim button down and a denim jacket.

Denim on denim has recently come back into style, and for all the right reasons. When paired properly, the pieces can work to complement one another without competing. By wearing a light grey sweatshirt under the denim jacket, Harris demonstrates superior fashion sense by breaking up the denim pieces. Finally, wearing converse footwear helps with the outfit’s rugged look, making it look stylish but comfortable. All tied together, this ensemble makes a well-rounded fashion statement.

These Messiah students have made it clear that denim is back in on campus. Pull out your own denim pieces and see how you can make something stylish out of it.
