It is no secret that college students are short on cash, but Messiah students show that it does not have to impact your wardrobe. Thrifting is an exceptional alternative for finding pieces to create an original outfit while still dressing on a dime.

Stores such as Urban Outfitters and Free People are trying to reinvent the look of thrift store items, but you can buy similar items for a third of the price at actual thrift shops. There’s an abundance of thrift stores off campus, providing great opportunities to reinvent your look on a budget.

thrifting1While thrift store clothes might be bought second-hand, sometimes they are the first thing you go to when getting dressed in the morning. Sophomore Ellie Ingram shows how her versatile thrifted denim button down pairs with her thrifted jeans, t-shirt and watch. A black vest and a matching pair of boots work to make the outfit look as though it came off a mall mannequin and not a thrift store rack.

thrifting3First-years Christian Barnard (left) and Preston Griffin (right) represent how well thrift store finds can fit in with today’s fashion. Bernard wears a thrifted button down with an old-school vibe, while Griffin pulls off a chill, simplistic look by wearing a patterned thrifted button down.

thrifting4Thrift store finds can pair well with pieces already in your closet. Sophomore Jenna McClain shows how her thrifted jeans and flannel work well with her grey vest and white converse.

thrifting5Sophomore Brooke Heilman explains why she loves thrifting:  “Thrifting is super economical for a poor college student, but it’s also environmentally friendly and does not further perpetuate the problem of unethical consumerism – two things that are important to me. So it’s mostly just a small thing I can do to stand up for what I believe in, and also get some pretty sweet and cheap clothing out of it.”

Heilman wears a thrifted, western-patterned, button down shirt as well as wool winter socks. She shows how if you thrift right, you’ll find both original pieces and absolute necessities.

thrifting6“I thrift for the thrill of the hunt to find that perfect sweater,” said senior Nick Oland as he shows off a patterned sweater he bought second-hand. Sweaters are a great find at thrift stores, since they are practical during the winter months and noticeably less expensive than retail store stock.

thrifting7An added bonus to thrifting is the ability to find clothing with a vintage feel, which will help if you are going for a fun, quirky vibe. For example, sophomore Tessa Ellis pulls off her thrifted patterned fleece with a pair of dark skinny jeans and white converse.

thrifting8Technicolor prints are in and sophomore Kelly Gordon shows how to fashionably wear one (at half the price!) Thrift stores might appear chaotic and time consuming, but taking the time to sift through the racks reaps rewards.

thrifting9“I enjoy finding those retro clothes and totally rocking it again,” shares senior Will Colfelt. Except for his t-shirt, he sports an entirely thrifted outfit from head to toe.

thrifting10Thrifting also goes beyond the usual shirts and pants. Never forget to look over the shoe section! Men’s leather shoes are very much in this season, and sophomore Michael Pasti shows how his thrifted footwear fit the look exactly. His brightly colored North Face is also a thrift store find.

The best part to thrifting is the unexpected surprise of what you’ll find. Get out and try your hand at mixing and matching outfits that are economically, ecologically, and ethically friendly!
