Award-winning journalist Michele Norris highlights third day of Humanities Symposium

Swinging Bridge staff report

Award-winning journalist Michelle Norris will be delivering the keynote lecture of the 2015 Humanities Symposium tonight at 7 p.m. in the High Center’s Parmer Hall.

The title of her lecture is “Eavesdropping on America’s Conversation About Race” with reflections from her position as a journalist. Admission is free, but a ticket is required to attend.

Norris is currently a host and special correspondent for NPR, and was previously co-host of NPR’s “All Things Considered”. She has won a Peabody Award, duPont Award, and the Overseas Press Club Award. Norris was named the 2009 Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists.

Her best-selling 2010 memoir “The Grace of Silence” assessed how America talked about race after the 2008 presidential election and also included Norris’ family’s racial legacy and a look at America’s own racial history. The book helped lead to a blog called “The Race Card Project”, where people submit thoughts on race in six words.

The lecture can be followed and talked about on Twitter with the hashtag #racemc15.
