After 18,400 square feet of renovation and construction, the new addition to Frey academic building is complete. Contractors have added an extension to the first floor as well as a new basement, according to Vice President for Operations Kathie Shafer.

The basement level is an open space designed for the Department of Engineering. Shafer said in an email that “this room is where students and teams will work on projects that are both part of class and the Collaboratory.”

There is also expanded space for the Visual Art Department. The first floor is divided into a senior art studio, a multi-use art classroom, a new fibers studio which was relocated from Frey basement, and a new printmaking studio which relocated from the Climenhaga building.

“I love the new space,” Shafer said, referencing the many windows and use of natural light. “The benefit of my job is I get to see a building go from ideas in a meeting, to drawings on paper, to a hole in the ground to the finished product. It gives both visual art and engineering much needed space for teaching and student work.”

Students have begun attending classes in the new space, starting Monday, Feb. 2 in time for the beginning of the Spring Semester.
