“Dressing up for class is hard,” “It’s too time consuming,” “Why put nice clothes on then sit through a class where no one sees them?”

These are all statements or questions we have either told ourselves or heard from others, but there is a response to all of them.

In fact, it is possible to look presentable going to class while still maintaining the need for comfort. Fashion is versatile, giving you the option of dressing up even your most comfortable and casual clothing pieces. Three Messiah students show how they can remain comfortable while still adding a touch of class to their daily outfits.

Sophomore Evan Lebo wears khakis and a long sleeve button down for a completed look that stands its ground in a crowd, but does not shout “Look at me!” His patterned pocket adds the touch of flair the outfit calls for, tying in the color of his shoes perfectly. Lebo says he enjoys dressing up when he knows he has a big test because it makes him feel more confident.

“I feel like I feel better when I dress up. I don’t think I need clothes to feel confident but when I look good I feel good,” explains Lebo. He proves how possible it is to dress in attire comfortable enough to take a test in, yet classy enough to make you confident.

Sophomore Molly Scott shows how she is able to take a pair of white-washed jeans and make them more than a “dress down day” piece of apparel. The gold accents in Scott’s black vest, paired with a knitted black sweater help to keep the viewer’s eyes on the focal point of the outfit. Black is a color you can’t go wrong with when trying to add a touch of refinement to an ensemble. With the addition of a fun pair of dark colored boots, her outfit makes a statement that isn’t too bold but also is not “bummin’ it”.

Finding a happy medium between Lebo and Scott’s outfits, sophomore Danny Brandt shows how easy it can be to dress up a comfortable cotton long sleeved button down with a pair of khakis. Khakis are an article of clothing that, paired with almost anything, make your outfit reflect an appearance of having put more thought into what you decided to wear. Brandt’s leather shoe choice also provides an example of an alternate option for more casual footwear that still makes the outfit worth a second glance.

Experiment and see how you can dress up some of your favorite go-to pieces for your next dress down day.
