Acclamation Christmas performance dancing into Grantham tonight

Perhaps you want to go see a dance group perform this holiday season, but you’ve seen The Nutcracker too many times, and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is too expensive, as well as far away. However, one dance group right in Grantham is set to perform their Christmas show.

The Acclamation Dance Ministry will be having their special Christmas Chapel tonight at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. Alternate chapel credit is also available to those who attend.

“I want Acclamation to be that tree, growing up into what God has called us to be,” said junior biochemistry major Jennifer Mikec, the current artistic director of Acclamation. “I picture dance as our overflow…but what does that look like practically? It means we are intentionally seeking God as leaders and members of Acclamation.

“It means we are collaborating with one another in meaningful relationships. It means we are sharing the results of our pursuit of God with our audiences, inviting them to ‘dig deeper’ in Him, with Him, too.”

This theme will be explored further at Acclamation’s spring concert in April as well.

“Christmas Chapel is a celebration of the Christmas message through dance,” Mikec said.

Besides being able to enjoy an hour of performance – ballet, jazz, modern, Latin, African and Israeli are only some of the featured dance styles represented – Acclamation’s Christmas Chapel is the last alternate chapel of the semester. There will also be a reception post-performance with homemade cookies, hot chocolate, and coffee.

“We hope it will be a time for both our audience and our dancers to reflect on the greatness of God’s love and respond with joyful gratitude,” Mikec said.

According to the Acclamation Dance Ministry website, “The purpose of Acclamation Dance Ministry is to promote creative expression through the art of liturgical and expressive dance, to provide an alternative language for the worship of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to use the gift of dance as a form of ministry to the Messiah College community and the community at large.”

Acclamation has been present on campus since 1994. About 100 students are involved in Acclamation this year. The theme for the year is “Dig Deeper,” taken from Colossians 2:6-7, which reads “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness’”(NIV).
