First-ever “Roomies Games” to challenge knowledge, friendship of Messiah roommates

It is a familiar game. But this time, it goes under a different name with a college twist on it.

Messiah College’s Student Activities Board will host the first-ever “Roomies Games” tonight at 7 p.m. in the Larsen Student Union. The game is a spin-off of the classic game show The Newlywed Game. Five pairs were chosen to be on put display and under intense, hilarious questioning and competition for the chance to win special prizes.

Jill Troutman, SAB’s special activities executive, said this is the first time SAB has done an event like this. Candidates entering the competition had to submit a 60-second video this past week and weekend for the chance to play in the games.

“We basically looked for creativity, personality, compatibility, hilarity, and stage presence,” Troutman said when detailing criteria used to pick the finalists. She chose her top fifteen favorite videos out of countless submissions, and the SAB executive board picked their top five favorites for the competition.

The chosen three female pairs and two male pairs will appear on stage tonight. The format of the game is such that it will test the roommates’ knowledge and compatibility with one another compared to the rest of the roommate pairs.

Victory in “The Roomies Games” comes with plenty of incentives: the winning pair will receive two free iPad minis. The second place pair will each be awarded a $50 gift card to Target, while the third place pair receives $25 gift cards. The other two roomie teams walk away with SAB swag bags.

Troutman hopes the audience will enjoy the on-stage entertainment–and have plenty of laughter–during the event.

“I am looking forward to seeing how well the roomies think they know each other and then seeing if they actually know each other that well,” said Troutman, who plans special activity events every month for SAB.
