Album Review: “Crush Songs” by Karen O

Known to most as the vocalist of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O has released her first solo album, Crush Songs.

The raw, coffee shop calm of this album has a very different vibe compared to the usually indie rock style of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The sweet and simple lyrics are reminiscent of Kimya Dawson’s work on the Juno soundtrack.

Crush Songs is perfect if you like raw, edgy vocals and the romantic musings of possible crushes. So when you’re first eyeing up a potential cutie, check out “Ooo,”or if you’ve just had your heart broken, try “Visits”. These short, but heartfelt ditties can soothe any minor heartbreak or kindle any budding romance.

Karen O’s acoustic reveries fit Messiah’s chilled, autumn vibe, encouraging sweater-clad lounging on Bittner beach and wrapping up in a hammock all over campus.

Although Crush Songs is a little rough around the edges, so is love. This has prove true when it is just maybe unfolding, or if you have been falling in love every day for fifty years.

Karen O’s sweet and simple sentiments suit the small wonders of everyday life, but the rawness of the album is not for everyone. The echoes from the recording style can mar the song quality, but it almost sounds like she is performing live.
