Think dark and mysterious, like a freezing cold winter’s night. The moon is shining brightly through the trees as their snowy branches sway calmly in the breeze. That feeling of the chilly night time atmosphere: What better way is there to describe Exitmusic?

Couple Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church met for the first time on a transcontinental train ride. This chance meeting eventually led them to start the band Exitmusic in 2000.

The duo wrote together for many years, until finally releasing their first album, “The Decline of the West,” in 2008. Later that year, Palladino and Church got married, forming a bond between their love of music and their love for each other. In the years that followed, the band recorded an EP, entitled “From Silence,” as well as their newest album, “Passage.”

The band’s dark sentimentality is formed by their clever lineup of instruments, including pianos, synthesizers, electric guitars, drum pads (for those extra sound effects) and a drumset. Exitmusic employs the individual qualities of these instruments to shape a sound that is mysterious yet profound.

Hidden among the bleak atmosphere of Passages are moments of cuteness, such as the “ooh ooh’s” in the background of the track, “The Night.” They never let it get too cute, however, throwing deafening guitars and thrashing drums into the mix on tracks like “The City,” and “White Noise.”

Synthesizers run amuck on the album and can easily be heard on tracks like “The Cold” as a low, buzzing bass sound. Bandmate and husband Devon Church does a nice job of creating blankets of shoegaze guitar effects that help to keep the album cushioned and interesting from start to finish.

The soundscape produced by the instruments act as a trampoline, aiding singer Aleksa Palladino’s impressive vocal range which bounces all the way from a low growl to a high pitched yell.

Palladino’s voice is chilling at times, hitting low notes and utilizing vibrato in ways that could make Taylor Swift fans uncomfortable. However, the lyrics are what truly convey Exitmusic’s message.

On the band’s facebook page, Church states, “We want our music to confront people in a gentle but powerful way, to make them feel something.”

Palladino reciprocates, saying, “To feel human again … to remind people, and us, to let yourself be vulnerable.”

This statement is the point of Exitmusic’s existence. Their lyrics, paired with their shadowy sound, paints a picture of the world as it is and offers hope of how we can overcome.

Exitmusic will perform at Messiah College at 10p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Larsen Student Union. Admission is free and open to the public.
